On December 5, 1777, The Winter Encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania began. General George Washington (1732-1799) selected Valley Forge on the Schuylkill River, approximately 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia. With its high ground and position near the river, Valley Forge was easily defensible, but still close enough to the city for Washington to maintain pressure on the British.

 

In February, 1778 as Deputy Quarter Master General under General Mifflin, Colonel Mark BIRD (1738-1812) was given the "impossible" order of getting food to General Washington's starving troops at Valley Forge. This task General Mifflin had failed to do earlier. Colonel Bird managed to float 1,000 barrels of flour from his own water grist mills in Birdsboro which were stored in Reading down the Schuylkill River in the dead of winter.

Rossie was the second cousin of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954).

Macre CROASDALE (1760-1782) was born on December 7, 1760, in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Macre was the daughter of Robert CROASDALE (1728-1780) & Margery HAYHURST (1729-1783). Macre married Samuel EASTBURN (1759-?) In 1781 in the Solebury Friends Meeting House, in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Macre was the third great-grandaunt of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987).

This is the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japanese bombers sneak attacked U.S. military forces at Pearl Harbor on Oahu shortly before 8 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941. The 3,435 U.S. casualties included 2,403 who died in the attack. The nation suffered either the loss of or the damage to 188 planes, eight battleships, three cruisers and four other vessels. President Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 8, addressed a joint session of members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. The president began with a sentence that has become, at least in part, one of the more memorable sentences in U.S. history: "Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." The speech ended resolutely, as Mr. Roosevelt said, "I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire." The attack propelled the nation into the Second World War, in which more than 400,000 U.S. troops would give their lives.

Benjamin was the son of James YANCEY (1752-1790) & Abigail Elizabeth CUDWORTH (1756-1791). Caroline & Benjamin had three children, Mary Eliza YANCEY (1809-?), William Lowndes YANCEY (1814-1863) and Benjamin Cudworth YANCEY Jr., (1817-1891). Caroline was the 1st cousin three times removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954).

Robert was the great-grandson of Captain Marcus Ross BIRD (1816-1887) born at Kings Creek, Rutherford County, North Carolina & Dorinda Alice NANCE (1832-1857) born in the Union District, Union County, South Carolina. Robert was the great-great-grandson of Colonel Edward BIRD (1781-1856) born in Birdsboro, Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania & Margaret Elizabeth SMITH (1782-1836) born in Lancaster, Chester County, South Carolina. Robert was also the great-great-grandson of Doctor Zachariah NANCE (1800-?) & Nancy Smith LIPSCOMB (1802-1857). Robert was the third cousin once removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954)

 

Donald Milton BIRD (1926-1999) was born on December 9, 1926, in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. Donald was the son of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) & Clara Myrtle Gray-Sadler (1900-1988). Donald married Cletha Faye SMITH (1934-2011) the daughter of Cecil Alman SMITH (1904-?) & Crystal Lucille PURCA (1910-?), on July 15, 1961 in Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana. Cletha was born on January 15, 1934 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana. Donald & Faye had one child, Randall Brian BIRD, born on June 16, 1971. Donald died on November 17, 1999 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana, at age 72, and was buried on November 20, 1999 in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Indiana. Faye died in 2011 in Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana at age 77. Donald was the 12th cousin once removed of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987).
