James Monroe BIRD (1823–1868) was the 3rd cousin two times removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954). Also, the 8th cousin 11 times removed of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987).

James was the son of Colonel Edward BIRD (1781–1856) & Margaret Elizabeth SMITH (1782–1836).  Edward was the son of Colonel Marcus "Mark" Huling BIRD (1739–1812) & Mary ROSS (1739–1790). James was born on January 23, 1823 in Kings Creek, North Carolina, his father, Edward, was 42 and his mother, Margaret, was 41.  [i]  According to the census reports, His father had a farm in 1820, 1830 and 1840 in York, York County, South Carolina. [ii]

James fought in the Mexican War.  According to the U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914; On May 19, 1847, James enlisted in the U.S. Army in the 3rd Regiment Company F. James was listed as being a farmer, with hazel eyes, fair completion, 5 feet 6- & one-half inches tall, from York County. [iii] The war lasted from January 1847 to June 1849. In 1847 The U.S. wins the Battle of Buena Vista, the Battle of Cerro Gordo and the Battle of Mexico City. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the 3rd U.S. Regiment was a Dragoon Regiment. It was led by Colonel Edward G. W. Butler and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas P. Moore, Louisiana. Service Record; The 3rd Regiment of Dragoons was assigned to the expedition to Central Mexico, landing near Vera Cruz with Major General Winfield Scott's army and participating in the Siege of Vera Cruz, Battle of Churubusco and the Battle of Molino del Rey. The Third Dragoons took part in General Joseph Lane's pursuit of General Santa Anna in January 1848, and Lane's campaign against the guerrilla forces of Joaquín Rea at the action of Atlixco and of Padre Jarauta in late February 1848. Major William H. Polk and a portion of Lane's forces engaged and defeated the Jarauta guerrillas in the action of Sequalteplan at Zacualtipan on February 25, 1848. In late May 1848, two companies under Polk's command escorted an American delegation to Querétaro, where the two countries exchanged official ratifications of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, bringing the war to an end. At the end of the war the regiment was disbanded.

James married Elalia Pratt FULTON (1833–1898) in York County, South Carolina, in 1849, when he was 26 years old. Elalia was the daughter of Daniel Asbury FULTON (1804–1843) & Elizabeth BLALOCK (1812–1885).  Elalia was born September 7, 1833 and died on April 19, 1898 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. [iv]

According to the U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865 Film Number M230 roll 3, James BIRD was a Confederate Soldier in the 5th Regiment, North Carolina Senior Reserves in Company K. James enlisted as a private and mustered out as a Private. James reenlisted as a First Lieutenant and reached the rank of Captain. James of York District, age 39, was a First Lieutenant in Company G, of the 5th South Carolina After the Reorganization on May 13, 1862, under Captain T. P. Whiteside. He was on the muster roll on June 30, 1863 as having been sent to the hospital June 13, 1863. He was on muster roll on August 31, 1863 as on sick furlough. He was on later available roll and he was not present at the surrender at Appomattox, April 9, 1865. According to Battle Unit Details - The Civil War (U.S. National Park Service) the Regiment assembled during March and April, 1861, contained men recruited in York, Laruens, Lancaster, Spartanburg, and Union counties. It was ordered to Virginia and, serving in D. R. Jones' Brigade, saw action at First Manassas. Later it was placed in General R. H. Anderson's, M. Jenkins', and Bratton's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg, then served in Longstreet's Suffolk operations and with D.H. Hill in North Carolina. Moving again with Longstreet, the unit did not arrive in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga, but was engaged at Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it was conspicuous at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, in the trenches of Petersburg, and around Appomattox. This regiment reported 3 killed and 23 wounded at First Manassas and totaled 650 men in April, 1862. It sustained 21 casualties at Williamsburg, 81 at Gaines' Mill, 73 at Frayser's Farm, 39 during the Maryland Campaign, and 102 at Wauhatchie. In 1864 it lost 18 killed, 95 wounded, and 16 missing during The Wilderness Campaign, and from June 13 to December 31, there were 11 killed and 65 wounded. On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered 19 officers and 263 men. The field officers were Colonels A. Coward, John R. R. Giles, and Micah Jenkins; Lieutenant Colonels Andrew Jackson, G.W.H. Legg, and John D. Wylie; and Majors Thomas C. Beckham, William M. Foster, and William T. Thomson. [v]

James died on November 30, 1868 from wounds he received in the Civil War, in his hometown of Kings Creek at the age of 45, and was buried was in December in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg, Cleveland County, North Carolina. According to his probate record in the York County Courthouse James had a 300-acer plantation with slaves that was transferred to his wife. James wrote his Will in November of 1862 stating he was “about to leave my home for the defense of my Country”. [vi]

Elalia in 1870. according to the United States Federal Census reports. lived in Division 103, Yorkville, York County, South Carolina, at Post Office Yorkville, occupation keeping house, Personal Estate Value $750. [vii] According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, chartered in 1848, the Kings Mountain Railroad Company began construction of a connecting line between Yorkville and the Charlotte and South Carolina Railway at Chester (completed in 1852). Rock Hill, located along the Charlotte and South Carolina route, rapidly developed as a transportation center in eastern York County, boasting 100 residents in 1860. More than a dozen academies were operating in the county at the outbreak of the Civil War. The most famous was the Kings Mountain Military Academy in Yorkville, founded in 1854 by Micah Jenkins and Asbury Coward. On the eve of the Civil War, York District was one of the more populated districts in Upstate South Carolina. There were 14 infantry companies formed in York County after war was declared. Of the 4,379 soldiers enlisted from York County, 805 died and many more were wounded. Only one minor battle was fought in the York District, the battle for the Catawba Bridge at Nations Ford in 1865.

Widow, Elalia in 1880, in lived on her farm in Cherokee, York, South Carolina. [viii]  Elalia died on April 19, 1898 in Grover and was buried in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [ix]

1. Margaret BIRD was born on November 9, 1851 in York District, York County, South Carolina. and, died on October 2, 1866, in Clover, York District, York County, at age 14, and was buried in October 1866 and in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [x]

 

2. Mary BIRD was born on October 28, 1852 in York District, York County, South Carolina. She was christened in Baptist Church. She died on July 26, 1936, in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina, at age 83. She was buried in July 1936, in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina. Mary married Logan PARKER circa 1872 in South Carolina. Logan was born circa 1852 and died in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina. [xi]

 

3. Lydia Elizabeth BIRD was born on May 1, 1854, in York District, York County, South Carolina and  was christened in Baptist Church, died on May 7, 1897 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. at age 43, and was buried in May 1897.  Lydia married George HERNDON about 1874 in York District, York County, South Carolina. George was born about 1854 and died and buried in Kings Mountain, York District, York County, South Carolina. [xii]

 

4. Edward Daniel BIRD was born on January 18, 1856 in York District, York County, South Carolina and was christened in Baptist Church. He died on February 8, 1924, in 1927 at Sumter Street, Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, at age 68. He was buried in February 1924 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. Edward married Annie Elizabeth BOLIN circa 1883 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Annie was born on May 21, 1858 and died on December 8, 1911 in Knowlton's Infirmary, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina at age 53.  [xiii] 

 

5. William G. BIRD was born on November 9, 1859, in York District, York County, South Carolina and was christened in Baptist Church, died on March 22, 1912 in Chihuahua, Mexico at age 52, and was buried in March 1912 in Chihuahua, Mexico. [xiv]

 

6. Sarah BIRD was born on November 16, 1860 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. She was christened in the Antioch Baptist Church. Sarah died on March 21, 1897, in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. at age 36, and was buried in March 1897 in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. Sarah married William Monroe HARDIN circa 1880, in North Carolina. William was born in 1860 and died in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was buried in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [xv]

 

7.  Rachel BIRD was born on October 28, 1862 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. And was christened in the Antioch Baptist Church. Rachel died on October 11, 1942, in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. at age 79. She was buried in October 1942 in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina.  Rachel owned property before she married Robert Pinckney RANDALL, the son of Martin Luther RANDALL & Nancy Elizabeth WHISNANT, on December 16, 1883 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Robert was born on August 3, 1859 in York District, York County, South Carolina and was christened in the Baptist Church. He died on October 11, 1942, in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. at age 83. He was buried in October 1942, in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. 8.  Iaz S. BIRD was born circa 1865 in South Carolina and died on November 27, 1889 age 24.

James Smith BIRD was born on January 18, 1865 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina., was christened in Baptist Church, died on November 27, 1889 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. at age 24, and was buried in November 1889 in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. 10. Robert Andrew BIRD was born on September 4, 1867 in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina and was christened in Baptist Church. Robert married Eunice GREEN circa 1887, in North Carolina. Eunice was born about 1867, in North Carolina. and was buried in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. Robert died on September 16, 1952, in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. at age 85 and was buried in September 1952, in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. James died on November 30, 1868 from wounds he received in the Civil War, in his hometown of Kings Creek at the age of 45, and was buried was in December in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg, Cleveland County, North Carolina.

 

James Monroe BIRD (1823–1868) wrote his Will in November 14, 1862 stating he was “about to leave my home for the defense of my Country”. This is a typed copy of it from the probate proceedings of his widow Elalia Pratt FULTON Bird (1833–1898) dated August 3, 1898.
