Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Sr., (1762-1821) was born on September 8, 1762, in Orange County, North Carolina. Rezin Sr., was the son of James BOWIE (1739-1789) born in Maryland & Jeanne MIRABEAU (1732-?) born in South Carolina. Rezin Sr., was wounded while fighting in the American Revolution and in 1782, married the young woman who had nursed him back to health. Her name was Elvira Catesby JONES (1766-1837) born in Savannah, Georgia. They were married on August 3, 1782, in Burke County, Georgia.

Rezin Sr., & Elvira had ten children: Lavinia BOWIE (1783-1783); David BOWIE (1884-1803); John Jones BOWIE (1785-1859); Sarah BOWIE (1786-1815); Martha BOWIE (1791-1845) ; Mary BOWIE (1792-1842) and Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Jr., (1793-1841).

Rezin Sr., was the father of Mary Bowie (1792-1842) the sister of Jim BOWIE (1795-1836) of Alamo fame. Mary BOWIE (1792-1842) married Abraham BIRD, (1784-1860) the son of Captain Abraham BIRD (1756-1821) & Mary JONES (1761-1844). Abraham was the half third cousin twice removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) .

Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Jr., (1793-1819) was born on September 8, 1793, in Elliott Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee. Rezin was the son of Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Sr., (1762-1 821) born in Orange County, North Carolina & Elvira Catesby JONES (1766-1837) born in Savannah, Georgia. Rezin Jr., was an inventor and designer of the Bowie knife. He also served three terms in the Louisiana Legislature. He died on January 17, 1841 at Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Rezin Jr.’s older sister, Mary BOWIE (1792-1842) married Abraham BIRD, (1784-1860) the son of Captain Abraham BIRD (1756-1821) & Mary JONES (1761-1844). Abraham was the half third cousin twice removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954).

James "Jim" Bowie (1796–1836), According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: James "Jim" Bowie (April 10, 1796 – March 6, 1836), a 19th-century American pioneer, slave trader, land speculator, and soldier, played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution, culminating in his death at the Battle of the Alamo. Stories of him as a fighter and frontiersman, both real and fictitious, have made him a legendary figure in Texas history and a folk hero of American culture.

Born in Kentucky, Bowie spent most of his life in Louisiana, where he was raised and later worked as a land speculator. His rise to fame began in 1827 on reports of the Sandbar Fight. What began as a duel between two other men deteriorated into a melee in which Bowie, having been shot and stabbed, killed the sheriff of Rapides Parish with a large knife. This, and other stories of Bowie's prowess with the knife, led to the widespread popularity of the Bowie knife.

Bowie's reputation was cemented by his role in the Texas Revolution. After moving to Texas in 1830, Bowie became a Mexican citizen and married the daughter of the vice governor of the province. His fame in Texas grew following his failed expedition to find the lost San Saba mine, during which his small party repelled an attack by a large Indian raiding party. At the outbreak of the Texas Revolution, Bowie joined the Texas militia, leading forces at the Battle of Concepción and the Grass Fight. In January 1836, he arrived at the Alamo, where he commanded the volunteer forces until an illness left him bedridden. Bowie died with the other Alamo defenders on March 6. Despite conflicting accounts of the manner of his death, the "most popular, and probably the most accurate" accounts maintain that he died in his bed after emptying his pistols into several Mexican soldiers.

James BOWIE (1739-1789) was born in 1739 in Maryland and died in 1789 in the newly established county of Burke in the Colony of Georgia. at age 50. James married Jeanne MIRABEAU (1722-?) circa 1760. Jeanne was born in 1722 in South Carolina and died in Burke County, Georgia.

James & Jeanne had one known child:

i. Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Sr. was born on September 8, 1762 in Orange County, North Carolina. and died on October 3, 1819 in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana at age 57.

Second Generation (Children) ¹

Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Sr. (1762-1819) (James 1) was born on September 8, 1762 in Orange County, North Carolina. and died on October 3, 1819 in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana at age 57. Rezin married Elvira Ap Catesby JONES on August 3, 1782 in Burke Co., GA. Elvira was born on April 3, 1766 in Savannah, GA. and died on October 30, 1837 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana at age 71.

Rezin Sr., & Elvira had ten known children:

i. Lavinia BOWIE (1783-1783) was born in 1783 in Richmond County, Georgia. and died in 1783 in Burke County, Georgia.

ii. David BOWIE (1884-1803) was born in 1784 in Washington County, Georgia. and died in 1803 at age 19.

iii. John Jones BOWIE (1785-1859) was born in 1785 in Washington County, Georgia. and died on June 22, 1859 in Bowie Plantation, Chicot County, Arkansas, at age 74.

iv. Sarah BOWIE (1786-1815) was born in 1786 in Washington County, Georgia. and died in 1815 in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana at age 29.

v. Martha BOWIE (1791-1845) was born in 1791 in Burke County, Georgia. and died in 1845 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana at age 54.

vi. Mary BOWIE (1792-1842) was born on May 4, 1792 in Sumner, TN. and died on August 10, 1842, in Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana at age 50.

vii. Rezin Pleasant BOWIE Jr., (1793-1841) was born on September 8, 1793 in Elliott Springs, (near Gallatin) Sumner County, Tennessee. Rezin Jr., married Margaret NEVIL, on September 15, 1814 in the Saint Landry Parish Roman Catholic Church. Rezin Jr., was probably best known as the inventor of the Bowie knife, made famous when used by his brother Jim in the 1827 "Sandbar Fight" on the banks of the Mississippi. He served in the War of 1812, and later was a three term Louisiana legislator. He was involved with his brothers in slave trade and land speculation in the Territory of Louisiana and the Republic of Texas. Rezin Jr., died on January 17, 1841, in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi at age 47. He was originally buried in San Gabriel Catholic Church Cemetery in Louisiana, but about ten years later his remains were moved to the cemetery behind Saint. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Gibson, Mississippi, a church built between 1849 and 1851 largely through the funding of Elvie Bowie Moore, Bowie's daughter. (bio by: Natalie Maynor)

viii. James BOWIE was born on April 10, 1795 in Logan County, KY. and died on March 6, 1836 in Alamo, San Augustine County, Republic of Texas, at age 40.

ix. Stephen BOWIE was born in 1797 in Elliott Springs, Tennessee. and died on January 29,1833 in Adams County, Mississippi. at age 36.

x. David BOWIE was born in 1798 in Louisiana and died in 1816 in Mississippi, at age 18.

Third Generation (Grandchildren)

Mary BOWIE (1792-1842) (Rezin Pleasant Sr. 2, James 1) was born on May 4, 1792 in Sumner, Tennessee. and died on August 10, 1842 in Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana at age 50. Mary married Abraham BIRD, son of Captain Abraham BIRD and Mary JONES, in 1815 in Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana Abraham was born in 1784 on Craney Island, Rockingham County, Virginia. Abraham died in October 1860, at Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana at age 76. Abraham was the half third cousin twice removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) .

John Abraham BIRD (1816-1866) (Mary BOWIE 3, Rezin Pleasant Sr. 2, James 1) was born in 1816 at Hollywood Plantation, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and died on September 20, 1866 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana at age 50. John married Winifred PIPES, the daughter of Charles PIPES and Winnifred HUEY, on June 15, 1840 in Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana Winifred was born in 1825 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana He had a residence in 1850 West Baton Rouge, Louisiana and died inNovember 1873 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana at age 48.

i. Angelina Adelia BIRD was born on June 14, 1842 in Belmont Plantation, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and died on December 7, 1929 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at age 87.

ii. Mary BIRD was born on June 6, 1849 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

Angelina Adelia BIRD (1842-1929) (John Abraham BIRD 4, Mary BOWIE 3, Rezin Pleasant Sr. 2, James 1) was born on June 14, 1842 in Belmont Plantation, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and died on December 7, 1929 in Baton Rouge, Louisina1 at age 87. Angelina married James Louis LOBDELL Sr. on July 30, 1857 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. James was born on February 16, 1832 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and died in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

vi. Pearl Winifred LOBDELL was born on September 5, 1871 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

vii. Eva May LOBDELL was born on September 5, 1875 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and died in Texas.

viii. Lavenia Bird LOBDELL was born on January 1, 1879 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

ix. William Abraham LOBDELL was born on October 14, 1882 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and died on August 31, 1947 at age 64.

x. Jayne Lydia LOBDELL was born on June 29, 1886 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

His 3rd great-granduncle James NASH (1810-1836) of Gonzales Mounted Ranger Company was killed defending the Alamo. Also, his 3rd great-grandfather John Bolin NASH (1807-1880) and his brother James H. NASH fought in the Army of the Republic of Texas under General Sam HUSTON (1793-1863) at the Battle of San Jacinto, fought forty-six days after the fall of the Alamo on April 21, 1836, in present-day La Porte and Pasadena, Texas. “Remember The Alamo”. He has numerous BIRD, NASH & GAY grandfathers, great-granduncles and cousins that served in the Army of the Republic of Texas and the Texas Rangers.
