Duncan I (1001–1040) King of Scotland was the 24th great-grandfather of Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861-1931) and the 25th great-grandfather of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) also the 26th great-grandfather of Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012).

Duncan was the son of Crinain (980–1045) "the Thane" Lord Mormaer of Caenmore, Lay Abbot of Dunkeld [i]  & Bethoc Ingen MacKENNETH (984–1045) the daughter of Malcom II MacKENNETH (954–1034) King of Scots. Duncan was born on August 5, 1001 in Elgin, Moray, Scotland. [ii]

Duncan married Aelflaed Sibyl FitzSiward (1009–1040) of Northumbria. Aelflaed was the daughter of Siward Biornsson FITZSIWARD (1020–1055) Jarl, Earl of Northumberland & Aelflaed Aelfled "Elfleda" (1027-?) of Bernicia, Scotland.  [iii]

Duncan & Aelflaed had four known children: Malcolm III (1031–1093) “Longneck" of CANMORE King of Scotland; Donald III (1033–1097) "Bane"; Duncan II (1038–?); Melmare "Maelmuire" "Melkofr" (1040–?)   [iv]

Duncan was the king of Strathclyde between 1018 and 1034 ruling the former Kingdom of Strathclyde as an appanage. [v]  Duncan was about 33 years old when he succeeded his grandfather as King of Scotland. In 1039 Duncan led a large Scots army south to besiege Durham, but the expedition ended in disaster. The following year he led an army north into Moray, Duncan attempted to impose his lordship over Moray an independent dynasty of Duke Macbeth, by military force. Duncan was then twice defeated by the Earl of Orkney's son, Thorfinn. On August 14, 1040, King Duncan was killed in the battle of at Bothnagowan, now Pitgavenny, in Elgin, Moray, Morayshire, Scotland. King Duncan was buried at Moray and was later laid to rest with other Scottish in Iona.  [vi]
